Small acts, shared with purpose, have the power to make a meaningful difference.
Each year, Mandela Day offers an opportunity to pause, reflect and act in the spirit of one of South Africa’s most enduring legacies. It is a day centered around a belief of service, compassion and our shared responsibility to care for one another. At Cheetah Plains, these values extend beyond our reserve and into the communities that surround us. This Mandela Day, our team and guests came together to dedicate their 67 minutes to a simple but meaningful initiative: packing soup jars for local families facing difficult circumstances.
The idea was centred around something fundamental; the comfort and nourishment of a warm meal. Mandela Day reminds us that creating change does not always require a grand gesture. Sometimes, it begins with giving our time, working together and finding a practical way to support those around us. For our 2026 Mandela Day initiative, members of the Cheetah Plains team joined participating guests to carefully prepare and pack soup jars. Each jar was filled with the ingredients needed to create a warm, nourishing meal and was prepared for distribution to families within our surrounding communities, with particular consideration given to households caring for young children.
While simple in concept, every jar represented something much greater.
It represented time freely given. Hands working together. A meal shared beyond the boundaries of our lodge. And, importantly, a reminder that small acts of kindness can carry meaning far beyond the moment in which they take place. For our guests, the initiative also provided an opportunity to become part of something deeply connected to the place they were visiting. Cheetah Plains exists within a landscape shaped not only by extraordinary wilderness and wildlife, but also by the communities who call this corner of South Africa home.
Bringing our team and guests together for Mandela Day allowed us to share that sense of connection and collective responsibility.
A specially designed information card was created for every jar, providing clear cooking instructions and a list of ingredients to make preparing the meal as easy as possible. The intention was for each recipient to know that the jar represented more than its contents. It was a small reminder that their community sees them, cares for them and that, even during difficult circumstances, they are not alone.
Once prepared, the completed soup jars were distributed within our surrounding communities, providing families with the ingredients needed to prepare a nourishing meal in their own homes.
At Cheetah Plains, we believe meaningful hospitality extends beyond the experience we create within our villas.
It is also reflected in how we care for the environment in which we operate, the relationships we build and the communities of which we are privileged to be a part. Mandela Day is an important reminder of this responsibility, but the values it represents are not limited to a single day. Through acts both big and small, each of us has an opportunity to contribute something meaningful, whether that is our time, our skills, our resources or simply our willingness to care.
This year, that contribution took the form of a soup jar. And together, our team and guests dedicated their 67 minutes to creating hope, one soup jar at a time.
